What Is My Birthstone?
Every month of the year has at least one designated gemstone. The modern birthstone list was standardized in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers and has been updated several times since. Below is the complete list with links to learn more about each stone.
Birthstones by Month
- January: Garnet — Deep red, symbolizes passion and protection. Mohs 6.5 to 7.5.
- February: Amethyst — Purple, symbolizes clarity and calm. Mohs 7.
- March: Aquamarine — Pale blue, symbolizes courage and serenity. Mohs 7.5 to 8.
- April: Diamond — Colorless (and fancy colors), symbolizes strength and eternal love. Mohs 10.
- May: Emerald — Green, symbolizes rebirth and love. Mohs 7.5 to 8.
- June: Pearl, Alexandrite, Moonstone — Three options for June. Pearl symbolizes purity; alexandrite changes color; moonstone shows a soft glow.
- July: Ruby — Red, symbolizes love and passion. Mohs 9. One of four precious gemstones.
- August: Peridot — Green, symbolizes prosperity and renewal. Mohs 6.5 to 7. Almost always untreated.
- September: Sapphire — Blue (and many other colors), symbolizes wisdom and truth. Mohs 9.
- October: Opal and Tourmaline — Opal shows play-of-color; tourmaline comes in every color. Opal Mohs 5.5 to 6.5; tourmaline Mohs 7 to 7.5.
- November: Citrine and Topaz — Citrine is warm yellow-orange; topaz comes in many colors. Both Mohs 7+.
- December: Blue Topaz, Zircon, Tanzanite, Turquoise — Four December options, all in shades of blue.
