FAQ - Carnelian Dangle Earrings
-
What is carnelian and is it a natural gemstone?
Yes. Carnelian is a natural variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz mineral, colored warm orange to red by iron oxide. It is one of the oldest gemstones used in human adornment, with a documented history spanning thousands of years across Egyptian, Roman, and Mesopotamian cultures.
-
What is the difference between carnelian and orange agate?
Carnelian and orange agate are both varieties of chalcedony and are closely related. Carnelian is distinguished by its translucency and warm orange-to-red color from iron oxide, while agate typically shows visible banding or layering. In practice, the two names are often used interchangeably in the trade.
-
What zodiac sign is associated with carnelian?
Carnelian is most closely associated with Aries, Leo, and Virgo. It is considered a stone of courage and vital creative energy, qualities that align with Aries's boldness, Leo's expressive warmth, and Virgo's productive, grounded nature.
-
Does carnelian fade over time?
Natural carnelian may deepen or subtly shift in color with extended UV exposure, though it is generally considered stable for everyday jewelry wear. Avoiding prolonged direct sunlight and storing properly will help maintain the stone's color over time.
-
How do I care for carnelian earrings?
Carnelian has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7. Clean with mild soap and warm water, avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, and remove before swimming or applying perfume. Store separately to avoid scratching from harder gems.

Carnelian Dangle Earrings
Not every stone announces itself. Carnelian earrings are the kind of piece that earns a second look, warm amber-orange with a translucent inner glow that deepens toward sunset red, held in a sculptural bezel with just enough organic texture to feel genuinely handmade. The more time you spend with them, the more they give back.
Carnelian is associated with courage, creativity, and vital energy. Whether you are gifting them to someone drawn to the stone's particular beauty, marking a personal milestone, or choosing a piece that feels intentional rather than obvious, these earrings carry meaning without announcing it. They resonate with Aries, Leo, Virgo. Suspended from sculpted shepherd's hooks, they hang at 2 inches and move with you, balanced for all-day wear from the first time you put them on.
Each pair is made to order in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, in your choice of sterling silver, 14K gold-fill, rose gold-fill, or oxidized sterling silver. The result is an earring that feels like it belongs somewhere between artisan craft and refined design, as well suited to a cashmere sweater as a structured blazer.

About This Stone
Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz, colored by iron oxide into its characteristic warm spectrum of amber, orange, and burnt sienna. One of the oldest gemstones in human adornment history, it has been found in Egyptian burial sites and Mesopotamian jewelry dating back thousands of years, long associated with vitality, courage, and creative energy. Its translucent warmth makes it one of the most visually alive of the orange-toned stones, with an inner glow that shifts between amber and red depending on how the light hits it. Unlike synthetic or dyed alternatives common in mass-market orange jewelry, genuine carnelian has a natural color banding and translucency that reveals itself under close examination, a quality these handmade earrings are selected specifically to showcase.
