What gives emerald that green?

Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl, colored by trace amounts of chromium and vanadium deep in its crystal structure. That same chromium gives ruby its red — a quiet kinship between the two most storied colored gemstones in the world. Most natural emeralds carry tiny internal inclusions called jardins — French for "gardens." They're not flaws. They're fingerprints. Proof the stone formed slowly, over millions of years, somewhere deep underground.

Origin

Colombia, Zambia, Brazil

The richest emeralds come from Colombia's Muzo and Chivor mines, prized for their warm, blue-green hue. Zambian emeralds tend cooler and more saturated. Brazilian and Ethiopian sources round out the modern market.

Beryl Mineral Family

Emerald is the green variety of beryl, the same mineral family as aquamarine and morganite. Trace chromium and vanadium produce the signature green — a deeper, more saturated color than any other green gem.

Durable enough for daily wear in necklaces, earrings, and bracelets — though softer than sapphire or diamond. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners (which can stress natural inclusions) and harsh chemicals. A soft brush and warm soapy water keep it brilliant.
